Vitamins, Supplements and Heart Disease

Brighton Your Day

Y’all know that I like to LEARN and lately something that’s sparked my interest is vitamins slash supplements. I think getting closer to 30 and realizing that there’s actually a lot about my own body that I don’t know makes me want to soak up any info I can. And I’m kinda always interested in easy ways to be healthier or to help my body feel its best – think everyone is, right?

This isn’t a comprehensive look at all vitamins and supplements but just a few of the ones you could take if you want to get into them. And obviouslyI’m NO doctorand you should always consult yours first – this is just the most interesting, general info I found on some vitamins I want to start taking. I know it’s confusing on what to take, so I just wanted to share my findings with y’all! Would love to hear your thoughts, especially if you currently take any vitamins or are in the health field!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are known for slowing down the aging process in your brain, so this is definitely an important one as I get closer to my 30s (not that thirty is even that old – but you know what I mean). In my research, I’ve seen a lot of experts say we should aim for around 500mg of omega-3 fatty acids everyday, which is the equivalent of 3 ounces of cooked salmon.
If you haven’t got much fish in your diet, you can take a supplement like fish oil (apparently it doesn’t taste as bad as it sounds) to get the benefits. Supposedly it’s also worthwhile to do the research and make sure you’re taking a high-quality supplement. Not all supplements were created equal, K?

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is said to help your body absorb calcium, prevent mood disorders and strengthen your bones (among a ton of other things) so it’s obviously pretty important. The easiest way to get it is through sun exposure, though apparently trace amounts can be found in foods such as fish and dairy too. If you want to get your Vitamin D naturally, experts say to aim for 15-20 mins outdoors without sunscreen, ideally not in the middle of the day. But if y’all are like me, you don’t spend much time outdoors unless you’re on vacation – especially when there’s lots to get done. I don’t really want to rely on a supplement for this one (y’all know I LOVE being in the sun) but sometimes a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

Vitamin K

Experts say Vitamin K is important for bone strength and preventing heart disease, and heart disease is one of the biggest killers of women in the US (did you know that?!). There are two types of Vitamin K – K1 is found in vegetables and K2 is found in dairy products. It’s always best to get them through your diet if you can so eat plenty of veggies including leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage as well as fish and eggs. But if your diet isn’t always the best (#guilty) it might be a good idea to have a look into a supplement. I’m not pretending to be an expert here but from what I’ve learned it seems important!

Hair, Skin and Nails

I know vitamins are good for overall health and all that jazz, but it wasn’t until I realized they were good for hair, nails and skin that I was finally motivated to take one as often as possible. Y’all know I love having healthy hair and the biggest players for hair health include Biotin and B vitamins. Biotin increases the health of your scalp by producing fatty acids and it also supports your hair’s keratin, which is actually what your hair is made of.

You can actually get Hair Skin and Nails vitamins where everything you need is in one capsule, which makes the whole thing so much easier too. There are a ton of supplements out there – some even come in gummy form (that’s what I’ll be having).

Multivitamins

Y’all know I love being real with you guys so I thought I’d share what I discovered about multivitamins. Which is that it’s actually pretty hard to tell whether it’s worthwhile taking one or not and I’m still kinda confused….

I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to figure it out but a lot of the experts disagree on whether or not there’s any point having them. Some say it’s worthwhile because they cover all your bases etc, particularly if you’re not eating a wholesome diet everyday (because #life). Others say everyone’s needs are so different that it often does more harm than good. And that multivitamins are basically just good marketing. So I don’t know whether I’m going to start taking multivitamins or not, I’m still undecided. Let me know in the comments if you’re taking them and you’ve noticed a difference. I plan to ask my doctor next time I go in.

Alright, Brighton’s lesson for the day is over, ha! Hope you guys enjoy these little info-filled posts but lemme know!
